The Investigative Service of Georgia’s Ministry of Finance, in coordination with the Prosecutor’s Office, has detained an employee of Tbilisi City Hall on charges of attempted fraud, the body said on Saturday.
The investigation found M.G., a senior specialist at the City Hall’s Department of Inspection and Organisation and Management of Labour Safety, allegedly promised a citizen the registration of a 1,000-square-meter plot of land owned by the Tbilisi Municipality in exchange for $16,000. The suspect was arrested immediately after receiving the money.
The crime is punishable by six to nine years of imprisonment.
Authorities said the investigation is ongoing to identify and hold accountable other individuals possibly involved in the scheme.
