Georgia’s opposition alliance on Thursday called for the “peaceful dismantling” of the Government, warning that the country’s independence is under threat.

In a statement marking the anniversary of the April 9 tragedy, the alliance described the date as one of the most significant in Georgia’s modern history, linking it to the country’s path to independence.

The group said the events of April 9, 1989 played a decisive role in ending Soviet rule and paving the way for the restoration of independence, later confirmed by a nationwide referendum in 1991.

According to the statement, Georgia’s sovereignty is once again at risk, with the alliance accusing ruling party founder and honorary chair Bidzina Ivanishvili of leading a “pro-Russian regime” that has isolated the country from the Western world.

“To defend freedom and peace, it is vital to peacefully dismantle the regime that has placed the country in isolation from the free world,” the statement said.

The alliance also announced plans for a large-scale rally on May 26, Georgia’s Independence Day, calling for national mobilisation around the idea of independence.

It urged citizens to join the movement, saying the effort would ultimately “overthrow the regime” and return the country to what it described as its historic path of development.
