The Georgian Foreign Office on Wednesday said it had been informed that two Georgian volunteers currently fighting in Ukraine against Russia had been taken hostage by Russian troops.

“The Georgian side will use all international mechanisms at its disposal, including the International Red Cross Organization and the Swiss Confederation, as a mediator between Georgia and the Russian Federation, to protect the rights of Georgian citizens guaranteed by the Constitution,” the Ministry said.

The Russian media on Tuesday identified the volunteers as Giorgi Chubitidze and Giorgi Goglidze.

Independent sources from the International Legion in Ukraine confirmed the information the same day and said the volunteers had been captured in the Donetsk region last week.
