Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze accused Transparency International Georgia of “spreading false information” over the possible presence of corruption in the Mayor’s office, claiming that the organisation was engaged with a “dirty campaign”.

“Georgia is one of the leading countries in the world in the fight against corruption. You can see the studies and assessments published by international institutions. You can be sure that our country is one of the leading countries in this regard,” Kaladze said on Tuesday.

In its study released on Monday TI Georgia pointed at possible corruption cases in the Mayor’s Office.

The organisation suggested that elite corruption and “improper reactions” to it “has been a serious problem in recent years.”

TI Georgia provided names and possible cases of corruption in the study.
