Two Ukrainian nationals arrested in Georgia over large-scale drug trafficking plot

Georgian police have arrested two Ukrainian nationals on suspicion of drug possession and preparing to facilitate the sale of exceptionally large quantities of narcotics as part of an organised group, the Interior Ministry said on Monday.

The ministry said officers from the Vake-Saburtalo Main Division of the Tbilisi Police Department detained the suspects following an investigation.

Investigators alleged the two men developed a scheme to distribute narcotics and planned to sell exceptionally large quantities of drugs using various methods.

During an investigative experiment, police seized an exceptionally large quantity of methadone from a location identified by the suspects. A search of their temporary residence also uncovered materials allegedly intended for packaging narcotics, the ministry said.

The offences are punishable by up to 20 years' imprisonment or life imprisonment.
