Opposition leader says 30 MPs challenge constitutionality of elections in court

Tamar Kordzaia, a leader of the United National Movement opposition party, announced that 30 MPs have filed a constitutional appeal challenging the legitimacy of the October 26 elections. The Constitutional Court is expected to review the case within a month, raising concerns about the legality of the planned parliamentary session on November 25 or 26.

Kordzaia explained “This means that the Constitutional Court must accept the appeal and review the matter of constitutionality within a month. On the other hand, it means that the Georgian Parliament’s mandate does not have the authority to recognize new MPs, as the constitutionality of all 150 parliamentary seats is in question.”

She added, “Given this, the session announced by Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze for November 25 or 26 would be unconstitutional.”

This legal action follows a similar constitutional appeal by President Salome Zourabichvili, who also questioned the elections’ adherence to constitutional principles.
