The Armenian parliament on April 1 approved an amendment to the Electoral Code, which the opposition said was designed to help Prime Minister Nikola Fashinyan win the June snap parliamentary elections.

The changes proposed by Fashinian on March 24 provide for a transition to a fully proportional rule of the country's electoral system.

Until now, elections were held in Armenia under a mixed, proportional-majoritarian system. As a result of the last two elections in Armenia, parliamentary seats were divided equally between both national and individual candidates on the list of national parties.

With the legislative change adopted on April 1, the next parliamentary elections will be held in a fully proportional system. The decision was supported by Nikol Fashinian's ruling party "My Step". Neither the opposition "Prosperous Armenia" and "Brilliant Armenia" parties took part in the voting.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has announced he will resign in April. He noted that he was doing this "not to go, but to hold early parliamentary elections." Under the law, he will continue to serve as prime minister until the vote.

Extraordinary elections in Armenia will be held in June.
