A spokesperson for the EU External Action Service has issued a statement on recent political developments.

"Unfortunately, the political polarization has deepened since the arrest of Nikanor Melia, the leader of Georgia 's largest opposition party, the United National Movement. This polarization threatens to damage Georgia' s democracy.

We expect that the ruling power and the government will ensure the inclusive leadership of the country and put the interests of the Georgian people first. It is also important that the judiciary be fair, independent and accountable. In this regard, the EU will continue to closely monitor current developments.

It is crucial that the opposition play a constructive role, including entering parliament, to further strengthen democracy and the rule of law in Georgia, and to support the formation of a reformist future in the country.

Political stability, when all parties refrain from provocative actions and rhetoric, an inclusive parliamentary process and a court system trusted by the citizens is a precondition for Georgia to further deepen its partnership with the EU in accordance with the Association Agreement.

"The European Union stands ready to continue to support Georgia in this effort,"- the statement said
