Civil funeral of 5 identified persons who went missing during the armed conflict in Abkhazia is being held at the Holy Trinity Cathedral.

 

Today, the President of Georgia Salome Zurabishvili, the Minister of Defense Juansher Burchuladze and the Commander of the Defense Forces, Major General Giorgi Matiashvili were in Sameba to pay their respects to the victims and expressed their condolences to the family members.

 

Tea Akhvlediani, State Minister for Reconciliation and Civic Equality, also visited Sameba.

 

2 out of 5 identified missing persons as a result of the armed operations in the 1990s are from military and 3 are civilians. Konstantine Andriadze, a fighter in the Abkhaz war, will be buried with military honors tomorrow at the “Heroes ‘Shelter” at the Brothers’ Cemetery in Digomi. The Ukrainian military will be transferred from the Sameba to his homeland in Lviv, and the bodies of civilians will be buried at various locations, including ancestral cemeteries, at the discretion of the families.

 

Through the joint efforts of the Office of the State Minister for Reconciliation and Civic Equality and the International Committee of the Red Cross, within the framework of the bilateral Georgian-Abkhazian coordination mechanism, 5 identified missing persons were transferred as a result of the armed operations in the 1990s. The identification of the remains was carried out as a result of anthropological research by the International Committee of the Red Cross.
