The United States has completed its mission in Afghanistan and will begin an orderly withdrawal of the American contingent from May 1, said American leader Joe Biden.
"The United States will begin the final withdrawal of its military personnel from May 1 this year," Biden said, speaking Wednesday.
He noted that this process will be carried out in an orderly manner and in full coordination with allies, who currently have more forces in Afghanistan than the United States.
"We will complete the withdrawal before we mark the anniversary of the 9/11 events," he said.
According to him, the United States has achieved all its tasks in Afghanistan.
"It's time to end America's longest war, it's time to bring our military home," he said.
At the same time, Biden warned the Taliban militants against attacks on American servicemen during this process. He added that in the event of such attacks, the United States "will defend itself and its partners in all available ways."
Biden also promised that the United States will continue to support Afghanistan, as well as negotiations on a political settlement of the Afghan conflict.
The war in Afghanistan, which includes a series of armed conflicts, has been going on since the 1970s. The last, at the moment, stage of the confrontation began in 2015, after the withdrawal of the main part of NATO troops from Afghanistan.
US troops entered Afghanistan about 20 years ago after the September 11, 2001 attacks. It is the longest military campaign in American history. During the conflict, according to American media reports, more than 2.4 thousand American soldiers were killed in Afghanistan. Even then, the main opponents of the United States were the Taliban movement, which at that time controlled the country.
