Tina Bokuchava, chair of the opposition United National Movement, has criticised the Government’s recent legislative initiatives, arguing that they cannot be regarded as legitimate laws and do not serve the country’s interests.

Bokuchava said the changes had “nothing to do with democracy” or with Georgia’s welfare and prosperity.

“In reality, this so-called legislative change has nothing in common with democracy, nor with Georgia’s interests and wellbeing, therefore we cannot even consider all of this a legislative package,” she said.

Bokuchava added the ruling Georgian Dream party is passing laws “against the people” and creating conditions that make it easier to control society. She accused the authorities of using public funds while simultaneously undermining institutions and democratic standards.

She also claimed that recent laws “cannot be considered laws” and would not represent a positive or meaningful step forward for the country.

Referring to individuals detained during protests, Bokuchava said they had been arrested because they continue to support European values and Georgia’s European future. She argued that public resistance over the past year shows that a segment of society has not accepted what she described as a shift away from a European path.
