Tina Bokuchava, head of the opposition United National Movement (UNM), has said the ruling Georgian Dream party will “end very soon,” citing the “courage of political prisoners” arrested during pro-European protests and the activism of Archil Museliants, who was convicted on Friday, as evidence of the regime’s weakening grip.
In her press comments on Friday, Bokuchava highlighted the “determination of political detainees” in courtrooms as a sign of change. She described Museliants, 29, as “an outstanding young individual” whose actions “exemplify the broader fight against the current regime”.
Museliants was detained on 30 November 2024 during pro-European protests on Rustaveli Avenue in Tbilisi. Initially held under administrative charges, his case was later reclassified under criminal law, and he was charged under Article 187(2) of the Georgian Criminal Code. The charges relate to the deliberate damage and destruction of property, specifically targeting surveillance cameras near the parliament building, which Museliants allegedly set on fire.
Earlier on Friday Museliants was sentenced to four years in prison by Judge Giorgi Arevadze at Tbilisi City Court. Key evidence in the case included video footage captured by a citizen and published by Postv, showing a hooded individual setting fire to electrical cables connected to the cameras. Museliants refused any plea agreement.
“Archil Museliants is another example of the struggle, not just for political detainees, but for every person involved in the fight against Ivanishvili [the founder and honorary chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party],” Bokuchava said.
