Chair of the opposition United National Movement party, Tina Bokuchava, has stated that the ruling Georgian Dream party has been left without key allies following recent political developments in Hungary.

Bokuchava added the party no longer has supporters within the European Union who previously defended its positions.

“Georgian Dream is now left alone. It no longer has the ally or partner it frequently referred to,” she said, adding that claims of ideological alignment with ultra-conservative forces in the West were “false.”

Bokuchava argued that the outcome of Hungary’s parliamentary elections has weakened ruling party founder and honorary chair Bidzina Ivanishvili, claiming he has lost a significant international partner.

“We see that the only ally that played an important role for Georgian Dream and helped it avoid sanctions and critical decisions is no longer in power. This means the party has no remaining supporter it could point to within the EU,” she noted.

She further described the change in Hungary as an opportunity to increase international pressure on the Georgian authorities.

Her comments follow Hungary’s parliamentary elections, where the opposition Tisza party secured a constitutional majority, while Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is expected to step down after 16 years in power.
