Tina Bokuchava, head of the opposition United National Movement, together with party leaders, on Wednesday met with US Congressman Joe Wilson, the initiator of the MEGOBARI Act, during the party’s official visit to the United States.

According to the party’s press office, the UNM delegation, which also included party Secretary General Petre Tsiskarishvili and party leader Levan Sanikidze, began its series of formal meetings in Washington, with the session.

Bokuchava criticised claims made by the Georgian Government regarding the status of the MEGOBARI Act, saying they were misleading.

“One more lie spread today by the Russian-‘Georgian Dream’ regime is that the MEGOBARI Act is no longer relevant and not on the agenda in the US This is absolutely untrue. Discussions are actively ongoing, including in the Senate, with the prospect of attaching the Act to the Defence Authorisation Act, which has been adopted annually for the past 63 years. There is a very high chance this will happen this year as well. That would pave the way for personal sanctions against Ivanishvili,” Bokuchava said.

She further claimed that ruling party Founder Bidzina Ivanishvili had previously mocked US President Donald Trump by undermining the Trump Tower project in Georgia and accusing Trump of corruption.

“Once this regime changes, Trump Tower will not only be built in Georgia, but President Donald Trump’s initiatives will return to the international arena as worthy and reliable strategic partnerships for our friends,” she added.
