Tina Bokuchava, head of the opposition United National Movement, together with party leaders, met with representatives of the US National Security Council at the White House as part of the party’s ongoing official visit to the United States.
The party’s press office on Saturday said the discussions focused on Georgia’s ongoing political crisis and what UNM described as anti-democratic and anti-Western steps taken by Bidzina Ivanishvili’s Government. Particular attention was given to the imprisonment of UNM founder and former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, as well as the party’s Political Council Chair Levan Khabeishvili, whom the opposition regards as political prisoners.
Speaking after the meeting, Bokuchava emphasised Washington’s strong support for Georgia’s sovereignty and democratic future.
“I can confirm to every citizen of Georgia that our country, our people, statehood, and freedom are very important to the United States. US officials clearly understand that there cannot be peace in the South Caucasus if Georgia is ruled by a regime that violates fundamental rights and imprisons its opponents. This is something we have repeatedly heard from Vice President JD Vance. For the sake of our shared security, peace, and prosperity - and for restoring strong relations with the US - it is vital that Georgia be represented by a pro-Western, pro-American, and above all pro-national government that fulfills the historic choice of the Georgian people to be part of the free world,” Bokuchava said.
