Tina Bokuchava, head of the opposition United National Movement (UNM), on Tuesday met with Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski to discuss issues affecting Georgia’s European path.
Bokuchava said discussions focused on two key issues: the potential suspension of Georgia’s visa-free regime with the European Union and ways to ensure that ordinary citizens are not affected, while sanctions could still apply to Bidzina Ivanishvili, the founder of the ruling Georgian Dream party and members of his Government.
The second issue raised was the release of former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, whom Bokuchava described as a close friend of Poland and an important figure in Georgia’s European integration.
She emphasised Sikorski’s pivotal role, alongside Germany and France within the Weimar Triangle, in shaping EU decisions on visa liberalisation. According to her, it is vital for the EU to find mechanisms that protect Georgian citizens while sanctioning the ruling elite.
