European Parliament member Tobias Krämer has called for the imposition of what he described as “real and targeted” sanctions against the ruling Georgian Dream founder, Bidzina Ivanishvili and his associates, urging the European Union to move beyond limited measures.

“Let us finally impose real and targeted sanctions, not only on a few holders of diplomatic passports, but on the de facto ruler Ivanishvili himself and all his accomplices,” Krämer said.

He said that for more than a year the Georgian people have been engaged in peaceful protests in defence of democracy, the rule of law and what he called the country’s European future.

Krämer also called for an independent international investigation into the alleged use of chemical agents by the Georgian Government during last year’s protests.

He said those responsible for such actions should face consequences, adding that Georgians demonstrate “real courage” on a daily basis and that Europe should respond with equal determination.
