Specific individuals, not the Georgian population, should face consequences for the actions of the ruling Georgian Dream party, said Tobias Cremer, Member of the European Parliament, emphasising that suspending visa-free travel for Georgian citizens would be unjust.
“They call themselves Georgian Dream, but it is clear they are turning into a Georgian nightmare under the shadow of the Kremlin. They are now trying to steal Georgia’s European future by systematically undermining the accession process,” Cremer stated.
He stressed that the European Commission’s upcoming report should clearly reflect this distinction, ensuring that the Georgian public is not punished for the Government’s anti-European policies.
“When we speak about restrictions, the question should not be which passport you use to travel. Those responsible must understand they will no longer be able to spend their summer holidays in Alicante or the south of France. Specific individuals must be held accountable, not the citizens who should not pay the price for Georgian Dream’s actions,” Cremer said.
Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament has called for the revocation of visa-free travel rights for 1,000 to 2,000 Georgian officials and their family members, rather than applying collective measures against the wider population.
