Top cleric Iakob: US never betrayed Georgia, EU acted in a shameful, treacherous manner

Europe has behaved in a shameful, treacherous manner, Bodbe Metropolitan, Eminence Iakob told journalists on Tuesday, responding to the European Council’s decision to grant Georgia European perspective and give a six-month time to address priorities for EU candidacy.

The top cleric suggested that the EU was likely to be interested in only Ukraine’s candidacy, while the delay for Georgia “was used by domestic forces to spark tension.”

“Europe behaved very shamefully, treacherously, I mean the European Parliament first of all,” said the cleric, stating that the MEPs should have tried to find ways to calm the situation down in Georgia and not on the contrary.

“Today, Europe showed us that there was not a single country that would stand firm for us to receive the status. America has never betrayed us. Starting from the 1700s, I have not seen a single decent step taken by Europe,” he said.

The cleric accused the EU of being cowardly which pushed Russia’s aggression against Georgia and Ukraine.
