Bishop Iakok, a top cleric in the Georgian church, on Wednesday slammed those Georgians as “traitors” who back Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his decisions amid Russia’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine.

Following a service, the cleric criticized Zelenskyy for recalling his country’s ambassador from Georgia and sheltering former officials in the United National Movement government, including the currently imprisoned former president Mikheil Saakashvili.

He claimed the Ukrainian authorities “sent” Saakashvili to Georgia in 2021 and now were calling for his release, adding “do you believe they care about this person? I do not think so”.

“Do you think he [Zelenkyy] protects Europe, America or Georgia? He has a war with Russia and is unable to stop this war, because if so, his people will eat him. Foreign states are giving him  money to pay salaries, weapons that are brought directly to the front line”, he claimed.

Praising the stance of the Georgian government to Ukraine and its ongoing conflict with Russia, the cleric said “Georgians should look after our country, we should not be victims of ideologies, we should have an idea, a national idea, we should do the right thing by not being involved in the war, we should observe what will happen, how it will be”.
