Georgian lawyer Tornike Migineishvili on Monday welcomed Amnesty International's latest report on Georgia, describing the organisation's assessment as “accurate and justified” and thanking it for documenting developments in the country.
Migineishvili said the report was timely at a moment when, in his view, violence had become normalised and concerns about impunity were growing.
“The processes currently taking place in the country do not require one to be a lawyer to understand the scale and systemic nature of injustice,” he said.
Migineishvili argued that recent statements by senior officials regarding footage of alleged violence reflected a troubling attitude toward accountability.
“Instead of focusing on the fact that violence occurs, they are saying the problem is that someone recorded it and it could be used for political purposes,” he said.
The lawyer said Amnesty International's reports had become important legal documents that his team uses both domestically and internationally, including in proceedings before the European Court of Human Rights.
His comments came after Amnesty International released a new report on Georgia titled “Georgia: Anatomy of Repression: 500 Days of Protest, Crackdown and Resilience”, which examines the human rights situation in the country and calls on the authorities to amend a number of legislative initiatives and laws.
