US President Donald Trump is celebrating his 80th birthday today, becoming the oldest serving leader in US history.
Trump was 78 when he was elected to a second presidential term in 2024, surpassing his predecessor Joe Biden, who was elected president at the age of 77.
For comparison, the youngest US president, Theodore Roosevelt, took office in 1901 at the age of 42.
The US Constitution sets only a minimum age requirement of 35 for presidential candidates, with no upper age limit. If Trump completes his current term, which runs until January 2029, he will be 83 years old at the time of leaving office, further extending the age record previously held by Biden, who was 82 at the end of his presidency.
Senior figures older than Trump also remain active in US politics. Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley, for example, is currently 92 years old and has served in the Senate continuously since 1981, with his current term set to run until early 2029.
