Donald Trump said that the United States carried out one of the most powerful bombings in the history of the Middle East, targeting military sites on Kharg Island in Iran.

He added the operation was conducted by United States Central Command and destroyed all military targets on the island.

“Just minutes ago, on my instruction, US Central Command carried out one of the most powerful bombings in the history of the Middle East and completely destroyed all military targets on Iran’s pearl – Kharg Island,” Trump wrote.

The US President said American weapons are the most powerful and sophisticated in the world. He also noted that he decided not to destroy the island’s oil infrastructure, though he warned that the decision could change under certain conditions.

“If Iran or anyone else takes action that interferes with the free and safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, I will immediately reconsider that decision,” Trump said.

Trump also stated that Iran cannot defend against targets the United States chooses to strike and called on Iranian military personnel to lay down their arms, reiterating that Iran will never possess nuclear weapons.

“Iran will never have nuclear weapons and will not be able to threaten the United States, the Middle East, or the world,” he wrote, urging Iranian forces and others involved with the government to surrender.

According to CNN, Kharg Island is a small landmass about five miles long off Iran’s coast and a critical energy hub through which around 90 per cent of the country’s oil exports pass.

Trump has already announced three “very powerful” strikes against Iran this week. On Friday he said another strike could take place next week. He recently also claimed that the United States had effectively won the war against Iran, with the remaining question being when the fighting would end.
