Trump calls for Ukraine-Russia peace talks

US President-elect Donald Trump has weighed in on the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria, attributing its downfall to waning Russian interest in the region amid mounting losses in Ukraine.

“Russia had no reason to remain involved there. They lost interest in Syria because of Ukraine, where around 600,000 Russian soldiers have been killed or injured during a war that never should have started and could last forever,” Trump stated.

He also suggested that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Ukraine may be ready to negotiate a settlement to end the war.

Trump called for an “immediate ceasefire” and urged negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. He emphasized the devastating human toll of the war, warning of its potential to escalate further.

“Too many lives have been lost senselessly, too many families destroyed. If this continues, it could become something far bigger and worse,” he remarked, adding, “I know Vladimir [Putin] well. This is his moment to act. China could also play a role in helping.”

Trump’s comments underline his vision for a swift resolution to the war in Ukraine, raising questions about the approach his administration may adopt after he assumes office.
