US President Donald Trump has said the current year presents “new opportunities” to renew ties between the United States and Georgia, as he congratulated President Mikheil Kavelashvili and the Georgian people on Independence Day.

According to the presidential press service, the congratulatory letter was delivered to the Georgian side by US Chargé d’Affaires Alan Purcell.

In his message, Trump said the year creates “new opportunities to renew the friendly ties between the American and Georgian peoples” and to promote the security and prosperity of both countries.

“The United States continues to firmly support Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders,” the letter states.

Trump also reaffirmed US support for the Georgian people in their pursuit of “lasting security, self-determination and independence.”
