US President Donald Trump said there is a “very good chance” Congress will pass legislation imposing sweeping new sanctions on Russia, describing the bill as a key priority of the late Senator Lindsey Graham.
Asked during a press conference about the likelihood of the legislation being approved within the next one to two weeks and whether he would sign it into law, Trump said lawmakers were giving the proposal serious consideration.
“They are taking it very seriously and it is being done in honour of Lindsey. It was his cause. He wanted it more than anything. You know how strongly he felt about it. And there is a very good chance it will happen,” Trump said.
Trump added that the legislation could also include sanctions targeting Iran and the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah.
“They are going to add Iran, and if they do that, it will be a very significant step. They may also add Hezbollah,” he said.
