A planned meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will not take place in the near future due to Moscow’s refusal to agree to an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine, Reuters reported on Tuesday.

According to the outlet, negotiations over the possible meeting were put in doubt after Russia’s stance became clear.

“I think the Russians wanted too much and it became obvious to the Americans that Trump would not be able to reach any kind of agreement in Budapest,” a source told Reuters.

Before the recent phone call between the US Secretary of State and the Russian Foreign Minister, Trump had said he expected to meet his Russian counterpart soon, while also acknowledging that Putin was unwilling to make concessions.
