US President Donald Trump has said the United States could continue large-scale bombing if a deal with Iran is not reached, while expressing optimism about a potential agreement.

“They very much want to make a deal and we want a deal too. If everything goes well, we will resolve it. Otherwise, we will continue the bombing with full force,” he said.

The US President also suggested that Iran could agree to abandon its nuclear weapons programme in exchange for peace.

Trump claimed that a major Iranian power facility had been considered as a potential target, noting it could have been destroyed in a single strike, but said Tehran instead initiated contact.

“They called us, I did not call them. They want a deal and we are ready for one. It has to be a good deal, no more wars and no nuclear weapons,” he said.

He added that without agreement on Iran’s nuclear programme, no broader deal would be possible.
