US President Donald Trump has suggested the United States could seek control over Iranian oil resources, including the key export terminal on Kharg Island, in remarks highlighting rising tensions with Iran.
He described seizing Iranian oil as a preferred option, while indicating that multiple military and diplomatic scenarios remain under consideration. Analysts, including those cited by the Financial Times, warn that any such move would carry significant risks, potentially escalating conflict and increasing US casualties.
At the same time, Trump said indirect talks with Tehran, reportedly mediated by Pakistan, are progressing. He has set a 6 April deadline for a potential agreement, warning of strikes on Iran’s energy sector if negotiations fail.
He also referred to developments around the Strait of Hormuz, suggesting a ceasefire deal could be reached quickly, though no details were provided.
