Trump considering Richard Grenell as special envoy for Russia-Ukraine conflict

President-elect Donald Trump is evaluating the appointment of Richard Grenell, his former intelligence chief and ambassador to Germany, as a potential special envoy for the Russia-Ukraine conflict, according to Reuters. Grenell’s selection would signal Trump’s commitment to addressing the war, which Trump has vowed to end swiftly during his campaign.

Grenell, who served as acting director of national intelligence during Trump’s first term, is recognized for his expertise in European diplomacy. He previously played a key role in Serbia and Kosovo peace negotiations. While there is no current envoy dedicated solely to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Trump is considering establishing the role.

Sources familiar with the discussions, speaking anonymously, indicated that Trump could ultimately decide against creating the position or appoint someone other than Grenell. Grenell himself has yet to comment on the potential appointment.

Some of Grenell’s views, such as his support for “autonomous zones” in the conflict and his skepticism about Ukraine’s immediate NATO membership, may raise concerns among Kyiv’s leadership.

Karoline Leavitt, a spokesperson for Trump’s transition team, stated that personnel announcements would be made directly by Trump when finalized. Grenell, previously a contender for Secretary of State, was ultimately passed over for Senator Marco Rubio.
