Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna expressed deep concern over the enactment of Georgia’s Foreign Agents Registration Act, calling it “another grim step in Georgian Dream’s crackdown on democracy in Georgia.” In a social media post, he stated that the law violates core democratic principles and silences critics, civil society, and media.
Tsahkna also warned that the law “clearly derails Georgia from its path toward the EU,” joining a chorus of international voices criticizing the new legislation, which took effect on May 31.
Georgia’s controversial Foreign Agents Registration Act, modeled after the US Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), was passed by the Georgian Parliament on April 1, the law has sparked significant domestic and international criticism for its potential to stifle independent media and civil society organizations.
