Archaeologists working at the ruins of Artanuji (Gevhernik) Fortress in northeastern Turkey have uncovered what is believed to be the long-lost burial site of Georgian King Ashot I, also known as Ashot the Great.
The burial site, located beneath the apse of the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, is believed to belong to the revered 9th-century monarch.
Excavation director Dr. Osman Aytekin said the archaeological team uncovered a 2-meter-long and 1.8-meter-wide stone tomb covered by an arched vault, directly beneath the church’s apse.
“Medieval Georgian sources mention that King Ashot was buried in this very church. The architectural layout and structure of the tomb fully correspond to those historical descriptions. Scientifically, we can now confirm the location of Ashot the Great’s burial site - an important discovery for Turkish archaeology as well,” Aytekin stated.
In addition to the royal tomb, archaeologists unearthed a communal kitchen and an extensive water reservoir system, suggesting that the fortress was permanently inhabited. The team also recovered two large jars and continued excavations to retrieve a third. Other discoveries include early 11th-century Byzantine coins, ceramic fragments, and stone and metal weaponry.
Once the archaeological work concludes, all artifacts will be transferred to the Artvin Museum.
Built in the 5th century, the Artanuji Fortress was later expanded and fortified by King Ashot I in the 9th century, who transformed it into the administrative centre of the Bagrationi Kingdom. Archaeological evidence indicates that the monarch and nobility resided within the citadel, while merchants and affluent citizens lived in the walled lower town, which featured baths, chapels, and fountains.
Aytekin noted that excavations are expected to continue for another five years, after which Artanuji is set to become a major hub of cultural heritage and tourism on the eastern Black Sea coast.
