Georgian television company Mtavari has released a list of 100 individuals it claims are members of the Special Tasks Department, allegedly involved in dispersing pro-European rallies on Rustaveli Avenue in November and December. The list also includes those accused of beating and arresting demonstrators and journalists.
According to Mtavari, the list was obtained through a confidential source within the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The publication of the names late on December 5 has sparked a flurry of activity on social media, where users have shared photos purportedly showing some of the listed individuals engaging in violent acts during the protests.
Among those identified on social media was Shota Porchkhidze, whose Facebook profile was widely circulated. In a public post, Porchkhidze addressed the accusations, stating:
“To those who have been following me and commenting on me for the past two days, I appeal to you: First, find out where I work, people, and then vent your aggression on a defense force soldier at a rally?”
Following the list’s release, many personal profiles of the alleged officers began disappearing from social media platforms, suggesting attempts to avoid public backlash. Critics argue that the disclosure raises significant privacy concerns and poses potential safety risks for those named.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs has yet to comment on the authenticity of the list or the accusations, while human rights groups have urged authorities to investigate the claims surrounding the alleged misuse of force during the protests.
