The US Senate is starting a process on Tuesday that will determine whether former US President Donald Trump should be impeached.
The trial will focus on a single charge – "incitement to mutiny": Trump is accused of calling for riots in the Capitol on January 6, when Congress confirmed Joe Biden's victory in the 2020 presidential election.
Exactly how long this process will last is not yet clear. Neither side wants to drag it out. The Democrats are aiming to get this process over with as soon as possible – within a week or two, then return to approving Biden's proposed candidates for various positions and to consider bills.
The details of the procedures in the framework of the trial are still being discussed by the leaders of the upper house of the US Congress. In particular, senators determine the length of speeches and the time allotted for questions.
Trump has gone through impeachment proceedings for the second time since the beginning of his term. Last February, U.S. Senators refused to find Trump guilty of abuse of power and obstruction of a congressional investigation.
