Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met the United Kingdom’s new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, and announced an agreement for the UK to provide electronic warfare technology to help protect Ukrainian drones.
Zelenskyy is the first international leader to meet Burnham since he took office as Prime Minister.
According to the Ukrainian President, the meeting took place aboard the Royal Navy's aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth at the Portsmouth Naval Base, where the two leaders discussed Ukraine’s defence needs and expanding joint defence production.
“I am grateful for the UK’s decision to provide electronic warfare technology to protect Ukrainian drones. This will be of real help on the battlefield. Together, we can achieve even more in the field of drones and other technologies,” Zelenskyy said.
He added that relations between Ukraine and the United Kingdom are “stronger than ever” and thanked Burnham for his commitment to the partnership and continued support for Ukraine's defence.
Burnham reaffirmed Britain’s backing for Ukraine, saying the UK stands “100 per cent” behind Kyiv and will honour all of its commitments.
“We will provide new British jamming technology to protect Ukrainian drones. This will help them strike their targets and save Ukrainian lives,” Burnham said, adding that the UK would continue to support efforts towards a full and unconditional ceasefire and renewed peace negotiations with Ukraine and Europe fully represented.
