On Monday, December 30, Ukraine successfully negotiated the release of 189 citizens from Russian captivity. Among the freed individuals are defenders of “Azovstal,” Mariupol, the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, and Snake Island, as well as fighters from various frontlines.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy shared the news on social media, calling it a significant moment for the country. “The return of our people from Russian captivity is always wonderful news for each of us. Today is one of those days: our team has managed to bring home 189 Ukrainians,” Zelenskyy wrote.

The returnees include soldiers, sergeants, and officers, with representation from the National Guard, Azov Regiment, Border Guards, Territorial Defense Forces, Navy, and Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Ukraine’s Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War confirmed that this is the eleventh prisoner exchange in 2024.
