Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed his country’s victory in the ongoing war against Russia would contribute to restoration of territorial integrity of Georgia and Moldova, in an interview with Natalya Moseychuk on the weekend.

“I believe that Ukraine’s victory will mark the end… I will be very happy for the people of these states… Ukraine’s political victory will create the opportunity to make decisions, create democracy and contribute to the restoration of the territorial integrity of Georgia and Moldova,” Zelenskyy said.

The Government of Georgia has joined international sanctions against Russia, but refused to impose individual sanctions on Moscow for invading Ukraine in February 2022, citing security and economic threats. The Government and the ruling party officials, however, have many times accused Kyiv of taking actions to “drag” Tbilisi in the ongoing conflict.

Russia recognized the Georgian regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) as independent states following its war with Georgia in 2008. Only Venezuela, Nikaragua, Nauru and Syria have joined the move so far.

Russia’s Former President Dmitry Medvevi threatened last week his country could join the Georgian regions if the West stuck to its pledge on Tbilisi’s NATO integration.
