Ukrainian, Moldovan Presidents hold 1st phone talk since Russia invaded Ukraine, ahead of EU Council meeting

Ukrainian President Volodymyr  Zelensky and his Moldovan counterpart Maia Sandu held the first phone talk since Russia invaded Ukraine back in February, on Thursday, ahead of the forthcoming decision of the European Council on the candidate status for Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova.

 

The Council is scheduled to announce its decision tomorrow, following the recommendation of the European Commission to grant European perspective and candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova, while only perspective to Georgia, which means that Georgia must first meet several criteria.

 

Zelensky tweeted that he had discussed the upcoming European Council meeting with Sandu.

 

“Looking forward to the EU’s decision on granting candidate status to our states. Agreed on mutual assistance on the path to the EU,” Zelensky said.

 

Sandu described the call as “good” and noted that European Commission’s recommendations were also discussed.

 

“We are committed to strengthening our cooperation in regards to our EU integration,” Sandu tweeted.

 

 

The Associated Trio – Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova – applied for EU membership after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
