Ukraine’s Main Directorate of Intelligence has released an audio recording in which a Russian soldier deployed in Zaporizhzhia expresses readiness to resort to cannibalism because of severe food shortages.

“A new horror movie from Russian positions in Zaporizhzhia. Due to a lack of food, the occupiers are sharpening knives and preparing to eat their ‘younger’ companions,” the body said in a statement accompanying the audio.

In the recording, the Russian soldier can be heard saying he is ready to kill a fellow servicemember, stating that they are looking for a younger soldier.

“I sharpened the knives, I do not care who I cut - I want to eat,” the voice says.

Ukrainian intelligence claims that cannibalism is becoming an increasingly common phenomenon among Russian troops. As an example, the body recalled that in June it became known that a soldier from Russia’s 68th Guards Rifle Division allegedly survived for two weeks by eating a fellow servicemember.

Previously, Ukrainian intelligence has also published other intercepted conversations that allegedly confirm cases of cannibalism within the Russian army. In one such recording, a Russian citizen stated that a soldier who had been listed as missing was, in fact, eaten by a fellow servicemember.

The Main Directorate of Intelligence reminded Russian soldiers that prisoners of war held by Ukraine are provided with food three times a day. It also encouraged voluntary surrender through the “I Want to Live” project.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on Sunday reported Russian forces lost another 1,130 troops over the past 24 hours.
