The Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on Thursday said they destroyed a Russian Kamov Ka-27 helicopter over the Black Sea earlier the day.
The body added the aircraft was shot down during an operation over the sea. No further details about the circumstances of the strike were immediately provided.
The Ka-27 is designed primarily to detect, track and destroy submarines operating at depths of up to 500 metres and speeds of up to 75 km/h. The helicopter can conduct search operations within a radius of up to 200 kilometres from its base vessel.
The aircraft is capable of carrying out tactical missions both independently and as part of a group. It can operate from coastal airfields as well as from ships.
Ukrainian military data indicate that since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ukrainian forces have destroyed 435 Russian aircraft and 348 helicopters.
