Ukraine strikes back: Russian missile brigade behind Sumy attack destroyed in Kursk region

Ukraine’s Defense Forces have successfully destroyed the permanent base of Russia’s 448th Missile Brigade in the Kursk region— the unit responsible for the devastating missile strike on Sumy on April 13, Palm Sunday. The announcement was made by Ukraine’s General Staff on Monday.

According to the statement, the operation was a joint effort involving Ukraine’s drone units, special operations forces, and the Security Service (SBU), targeting multiple military facilities in Russia’s Kursk region. These sites were directly linked to those responsible for the April 13 missile attack and other war crimes committed against Ukrainian civilians.

The strike on the 448th Missile Brigade reportedly triggered secondary explosions at the ammunition depot, though the full extent of the damage is still being assessed. Ukrainian military officials reaffirmed that all Russian units involved in the shelling of peaceful cities will be identified and held accountable.

On Palm Sunday, Russian forces launched a double Iskander ballistic missile strike on the city center of Sumy, killing more than 30 people, including civilians on a nearby trolleybus. Ukrainian intelligence later confirmed the missiles were launched from Voronezh and Kursk regions. As of April 15, around 125 people are reported injured, many of whom remain hospitalized.
