US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy discussed ways to bring Russia to the negotiating table during their most recent conversation, according to Ukrainian media reports citing an informed government source.
The source said Trump does not believe meaningful results can be achieved through words alone at this stage of the war and sees Ukraine's military pressure on Russia as a factor that could make diplomacy more likely.
"Trump genuinely does not believe that anything can be achieved through words alone right now. When President Zelenskyy puts pressure on Russia through all these actions - long-range strikes, active operations on the front line and so on - it brings Russia closer to the point where diplomacy becomes more likely," the source was quoted as saying.
According to the report, the issue was discussed during several conversations between Zelenskyy and Trump, as well as during a call that included French President Emmanuel Macron.
Zelenskyy and Trump held a number of discussions on the sidelines of the Group of Seven summit, which took place from June 15 to 17.
