UN launches $4.2 bln humanitarian appeal to aid 14.6 mln Ukrainians amidst war

The United Nations is appealing to donors for $4.2 billion this year to deliver essential humanitarian aid to Ukraine. Both those currently residing in Ukraine and Ukrainians who have sought refuge in other nations are identified as recipients of this aid.

As of January 15, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that over 14.6 million people in Ukraine, constituting approximately 40 percent of the entire population, require humanitarian assistance. Additionally, due to the ongoing conflict, 6.3 million Ukrainians have been displaced as refugees in foreign countries.

Martin Griffiths, the head of OCHA, emphasized the dire situation faced by hundreds of thousands of children residing in areas along the war’s front lines and those children were living in fear, experiencing trauma, and lacking basic necessities. Griffiths stressed the urgency of providing comprehensive humanitarian aid to address these needs.
