The United Nations has estimated more than 14.6 million Ukrainians, comprising 40 percent of the country’s population, will require humanitarian assistance in 2024 amid Russia’s ongoing invasion, which it said had forced approximately 6.3 million Ukrainians to flee their homeland.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs revealed this week the first week of the new year had witnessed a resurgence of attacks in Ukraine. These attacks, initiated on December 29 of the previous year, persist unabated, resulting in a distressing toll of death, injuries, and widespread destruction of civilian homes and critical infrastructure, the UN said.
The situation is further exacerbated by the harsh winter conditions, making it imperative to sustain a large-scale humanitarian operation, it added and expressed readiness to unveil a coordinated aid plan on January 15, aiming to address the immediate needs of the affected population.
February 24 will mark two years from the launch of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
