Hungary has suspended the issuance of work visas for citizens of Georgia, Armenia and the Philippines, with the measure taking effect from 5 June as part of a broader tightening of labour migration rules.
Government spokesperson Vanda Sond said the authorities were introducing stricter controls on the employment of foreign workers, arguing that their presence could place downward pressure on wages and reduce opportunities for local employees.
According to the Hungarian government, the changes form part of a wider policy aimed at prioritising the domestic workforce.
Official statistics cited by Reuters indicate that foreign workers account for only around 2% of Hungary's labour force. However, several sectors of the economy are reported to rely heavily on foreign labour to address staffing shortages.
The government said the suspension of work visas is only the first stage of a broader long-term policy that will further tighten regulations governing foreign employment.
