The head of the United National Movement opposition party – the largest opposition group in the country founded by currently imprisoned former president Mikheil Saakashvil – on Thursday confirmed his meeting with president Salome Zourabichvili during the month.
Speaking to the media, Melia said “as it seems Zourabichvili evaluates the current severe situation in the country very adequately”. He said he hoped the president would act in line with “state interests”.
“We should all unite around the country’s development vector. This includes not only the foreign policy priorities of Georgia, but also how we, the Georgian people, should act – do we want to once again kill the ]former] president, which will be followed by fatal consequences for the country, an iron curtain?” Melia said.
Zourabichvili on Wednesday said “a main question over Saakashvili will be answered in time”, and stressed she was interested “only in the country’s European future”.
