A newly elected head of the United National Movement (UNM) opposition party Nika Melia says that if he were the country’s wanted ex-President, the founder of the UNM Mikheil Saakashvili, he has already been returned to Georgia.

Saakashvili, who is a citizen of Ukraine and is holding an official post there, has pledged recently that he will return to Georgia for the October 2 municipal elections despite the high possibility of his arrest.

Both the majority of opposition parties and the ruling Georgian Dream party are sceptical of Saakashhvili’s vows, because it is not the first time he has made the promise.

The ruling Georgian Dream party members say that If Saakashvili decides to enter the country, he will be held accountable for abuse of authority and other charges.

Head of the Law and Justice party Tako Charkviani has created a general public movement to ensure Saakashvili’s safe return.

Saakashvili also claims that the Georgian people ‘will not allow’ his arrest.
