Member of the United National Movement opposition party Eka Kherkheulidze claims that General Gigi Kalandadze, who is wanted by Georgian law enforcement agencies, has been freed in Germany.
“My heartfelt condolences to you,” Khersheulidze posted on Facebook, referring to the Georgian Dream government.
Georgia officially applied to Germany to extradite Kalandadze, who served as head of the General Staff of the Georgian Armed Forces under the United National Movement government, to Georgia in mid-December 2021.
Kalandadze, who currently holds Ukrainian citizenship, was arrested at Berlin airport on December 20, 2021.
He is charged with illegal deprivation of liberty and torture which allegedly took place back in 2012.
The Georgian law enforcement agencies say Kalandadze and other UNM officials tortured an individual to make him admit to preparing a terrorist act.
