UNM MP rejects reports on alleged removal of party chair

Levan Bezhashvili, an MP of the United National Movement opposition party, on Tuesday rejected reports on the possible removal of Levan Khabeishvili, the newly elected party chair, from the post, following the decision of former chair, Nika Melia, to open a new office last week. 

 

Bezhashvili said the new office would not be funded by the party or considered as its structure. 

 

Melia claimed the new office had been opened to cope with the challenges sparked in the wake of the “very unfair” party congress earlier this year and not the election of Khabeishvili as the new chair in January. 

 

He claimed the congress had closed the party doors to many “devoted” members. 

 

In his earlier comments, Melia accused former officials in the UNM government, David Kezerashvili and Vano Merabishvili, of interfering in the party’s issues and claimed Khabeishvili was their pick.
