The United National Movement – the largest opposition group in the Parliament – on Thursday said it would boycott the President Salome Zourabichvili’s impeachment vote in the state legislature, initiated by the ruling Georgian Dream party earlier this month.
The party officials, who accused the current authorities of “hampering” the President’s activities in a bid to “undermine” Georgia’s European integration, also encouraged other opposition lawmakers to boycott the process.
The ruling party has addressed the country’s constitutional court to determine whether the President violated the country’s constitution through her visits abroad. The court is expected to release its conclusion in mid-October.
The ruling party, which takes about 80 seats in the 150-member Parliament, will need at least 100 votes to dismiss the President.
The GD officials claimed the President had “deliberately violated” the country’s main law and that she was taking actions “against Georgia’s EU candidacy” with the “radical wing” of the domestic opposition.
The EU officials highlighted the President’s impeachment would further strengthen polarization in the country and would not serve the national interests ahead of the bloc’s decision later this year whether to grant Georgia its membership candidate status.
